Conflict Resolution

David Barrington Conflict Resolution

There is a difference between disagreement and persisting interoffice conflicts.  The latter creates the "I'm right. You're wrong" mindset.  This often appears as Management vs. Employees. It also can appear as just an inter-departmental problem. However, members of one department will upset employees of other departments through water-cooler bitching.

Some business owners have been told that “conflicts are a way of life” and “conflicts are good for a company.”  Nothing could be further from the truth.

WARNING:  What not to do.

Establish committees or focus groups to "discuss the problem." The "hang out the dirty laundry” always creates hidden resentments. What's said today in a group “tell us what you don’t like” meeting will be remembered next year and remain as an unexpressed resentment.

What to do?

Whereas every executive should learn about upsets that are affecting the company and seek to resolve them, they should never do so in a group meeting setting.

You’ll understand exactly why when you phone me.
